halka art project welcomes Nadim Assad

Berlin based artist Nadim Assad is the current artist-in-residence of halka art project residency programme. Assad will be in İstanbul from October 11 to November 18, 2011 to investigate questions of the ‘public’ and ‘private’ spheres. His definition of the ‘public’ describes a field of free movement and communication of the common.
In his artistic statement he declares "My artistic work tries to intervene in this contradiction by experimenting with different kinds of re-arrangements, re-enactments, assemblages and combinations of documents. Themes that I am interested in are Urbanity, Migration and Identity, which stem from my own background as a Palestinian, born and raised in Germany and living in a metropolitan city like Berlin. As an artist I use this kind of self-experience as a departure for my work. Art offers me a space in which I can experiment with these topics in a broader way of expression and exploration, what „reality“ is, how it looks like and what further questions it could possibly expand to."

The program offers research and artistic production facilities for theorists and artists in its operational base located in Kadıköy, a vibrant district and one of the city centres of Istanbul.

The aim of the programme is to provide necessary infrastructure for the selected participant(s) to contact and have interactions with the local artistic and cultural circles, and to provide for the local community the background for mutual connections, cultural confrontation and cooperation possibilities with the residents of halka art project.
